Wednesday!

Today was a great day!  We started by working on counting one less and one more than Mrs. Wittwer.  Then finished a fluency practice where students are counting and circling the correct number, then we checked our answers.  When we say fluency, the purpose is to carefully count, not to go fast, but take all the time we need.  Then we read our Message of the Day, did Calendar and our Daily News.   Today we went outside during AM and PM classes for recess!  The students loved getting outside and running around.  We then had reading groups focusing on our letter of the week, Ff and our sight word "play."  Today, we read our leveled readers, played a blending game, practiced writing our sight word, writing and counting different ways to get to six and listened to "There Was An Old Martian Who Swallowed The Moon."  In the AM class, we used shapes to create a mystery monster and in the PM class we had a Royal Reader celebrating Avery!

Reminders:
1. Thursday: Tomorrow is a book exchange day, please have sticky notes for your child to get a new book.
2. Friday: Homework folders and Library books are due!
3. Our Valentine's Day party will be on Friday, February 12th.  If you would like to volunteer, please email me. Thank you!
4. RAZ Kids and IXL are on line for all kiddos to access. Please remember, the programs do not replace our HW packet.
5. The 100th Day of school is February 19th. We will have a little celebration and some fun 100th Day activities.

Tuesday!

Today was a great day!  We started our day with our City Mouse project!  It is a big cutting and following directions project and students did an amazing job!  We also had Reading Groups focusing on our letter of the week- Ff and our sight word "play."  We read our non-fiction decodable book "Can it Fit?" We also played a blending game, did our ABC book (fish page), practiced writing the letter F and listened to "Skippyjon Jones Snow What."  We also worked on rhyming and figuring our what words rhyme in one of my favorite stories, "Snow Dog, Go Dog." In math, we worked on our rekenreks figuring out which number is less or more.

Have a great evening!

Monday!

Our new letter of the week is Ff, and our new sight word is "play."  Today we started the day with reading our Alpha Tales book, Fifi Ferret's Flute.  All about how Fifi and her friends try to save her flute from the river!  We then worked on solving puzzles, did our picture guess for the letter Ff, Calendar and Daily News!  We read the non-fiction book, Animal Babies ABC.  This book is a wonderful non-fiction about different animal babies and a few facts about them.  We worked on writing a sentence all on our own today using the sight word "love." The students writing turned out really nice.  They did a great job sounding out words they were trying to write and using the alphabet chart!  The morning class was able to do our math lesson of the day and a few minutes of Free Choice.  The math lesson focuses on counting and telling which number of objects is less and more.  The PM class had Library Checkout and will catch up on math tomorrow.  Mrs. Pitts came today and we learned some great ways to get someone else's attention when we need it.  If a student needs help or forgot what they are suppose to be doing they can quietly ask their neighbor, "Excuse me, can you remind me what we are doing?"  Or if they need my attention when I am helping someone else or teaching under the document camera, "Excuse me, I need help when you are done Mrs. Wittwer."  We taught them, first you say "Excuse me," then you say what you need.

1. Homework folders came home Today, Monday (1-25).

Friday!

The kinders LOVED their specialist time with Mrs. Mulder. They were able to sing music, read a few stories, and go bowling! After specialists, we talked about our social studies focus - which is titled "where you live." We watched a short video called The City Mouse and The Country Mouse. We discussed the video and how it was similar to the book we read with the same title. Today, we focused on the country and made a little country mouse. Students worked hard following a lot of directions while cutting and glueing.  They did a super job!  Next week, we will discuss more social studies and make our city mouse. Our AM kinders were able to check out books today during Library and our PM kinders will have library check out time on Monday.

Thursday!

Today was a great Thursday!  We started the day with making our "O" hats.  We then did our Calendar and Daily Message routine.  Today is day number 80!  We are working on spelling the word "friends" and "is" in our Daily News.  We then had indoor recess due to the wet and slick blacktop.  After recess, we had reading groups focusing on phoneme isolation, the /o/ sound and we read our readers.  Students are doing a great job at starting to attack words they don't know to sound them out.  Students also worked on writing sight word sentences, reading and coloring their short "o" book and listening to the story "Bad Guys Get Cookie."  After reading groups we played a fun math game with our elbow partners working on "greater" or "less."  Each partner rolled a die, wrote their number and then circled the number that was greater!  Students had a great time rolling their die with their partner!

Tuesday!

Today was a great Tuesday!  Our new letter of the week is Oo and our new sight word of the week is "is."  We started our day of with counting on the rekenrek and learning how to use it.  Today in our math lesson, we were working on counting one more.

After math, we read our Alpha Tales book, "Olive the Octopus's Day of Juggling," which focuses on all the sounds the letter O can say.  After reading, we guessed what was in my alphabet can (many things starting with o).  Then we did our Daily Message and Calendar routine!  Today is day number 78!  Students are getting really good at their counting!  After that, we had indoor recess due to the ice on the blacktop.  We then had reading groups, working on blending, decoding and writing the sounds that we hear and say.  We also worked on our ABC book (octopus), writing the letter o and our sight words, and listened to the story Too Many Toys by David Shannon.  We finished with our first math sprint, where students had to count and circle the number of objects trying to beat the bell.

Reminders:
1. Homework folders came home today (1/19).
2. Kindergarten has started RAZ-Kids (an on-line reading program) and IXL (an on-line math program) this week. Both these programs are meant to be used as tools to practice and challenge your child. They do not replace the current homework.

Tuesday!

Today was a great day!  We started with writing our numbers on the January calendar.  All students were able to finish writing their numbers and started coloring their calendar, if they didn't finish, they can do so at home.  I also told them that if it was ok with mom and dad that they can hang up their calendar in their room.  Today, in math we worked on the concepts of more and less of numbers to ten.  After math, we went outside to recess!  After recess, we had reading groups.  We worked on initial sounds, blending sounds to make real and nonsense words, capacity, worked on handwriting our sight word sentences, and listening to a story.  We also started our writing of Martin Luther King Jr. today!

Reminders:
IXL and RAZ-Kids are now online for your child's use.  Remember, this does not replace the current homework, this is for extension and differentiation for your child.  If they get done reading the paper take home book and want to read a different book online or they want to read the same book online in color, that is now an option.

For IXL math, please have your student start out at the kindergarten level math, work through all the skills earning awards when their SmartScore gets to 100.  Be sure they are signed in so they get credit for all their hard work!  :)

Monday

We had a wonderful Monday!  We are reviewing the letters Nn and Cc and the sight words "to" and "have."  Today, we started our day sharing what we did over the weekend with our table mates and then everyone wrote a sentence about it.  We are working super hard on our giraffe, chicken and monkey letters, making sure the letters are sitting on the line and that we end our sentence with punctuation!  We read our Message of the Day, worked on subitizing (quickly counting in our brain) dot cards of 5, 6 and 7.  We then did Calendar and our Daily News.  Mrs. Pittz came into our class and taught us social and learning skills.  Today, we learned what to do if someone is distracting us while we are learning.  In math, we worked on the vocabulary of "equal," "fewer," "enough" and "the same as."  The students did a great job counting and figuring out how many more or less we would need to have the same number.

It's very fitting that we're talking about the word "equal" because after math, we read a VERY good non-ficition book about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our dialogue about Dr. King was so rich and I am truly proud of your kiddos. We learned that Dr. King wanted laws to be fair and equal for everyone.  We had a great discussion about what that means.  Lastly, our AM class was able to do a short free choice and our PM class had library.

Important Information:
1. Please read the personal safety letter (either the one that was sent home last week or attached to the email I sent this afternoon).
2. Take Home Books were sent home today.
3. Homework Folders came home today!
4. Kindergarten will be starting RAZ-Kids (an on-line reading program) and IXL (an on-line math program) this week. In your child's homework folder, on the left side are both user name and passwords for these programs. Both these programs are meant to be used as tools to practice and challenge your child. They do not replace the current homework.
5. Grandparent's Day will be March 18, 2016 from 8:15am-9:00am.

Have a great evening!

Tuesday!

We started our day together with Rolling A Gingerbread Man/Woman activity. Students rolled a die and colored in a gingerbread with the same number.  We then did our Calendar and Daily News Routine.  Both our am and pm classes had indoor recess due to the ice. Students enjoyed doing puzzles, painting, puppets, and dress up, along with many other things. We then transitioned to reading groups, where the kiddos worked on segmenting sounds, blending, writing sounds, ABC book (Cc page), handwriting (capital and lowercase C), and listening (Gingerbread Pirates). We then moved on to math, where we continued our review of weight (using the scale). Lastly, we ended our day with a mini lesson about informational writing. The students practiced all they'd learned while they wrote a informational piece about snow.
Important Information:
1. Please send your child in snow gear. We will continue to go outside as appropriate.
  2. If you volunteer, we are back to our normal schedule this week, if you have any questions email me.

Monday!

Happy New Year! What a great first day back from break and start to 2016!  We started our day by coloring a winter picture and catching up with our neighbors about what we did over winter break.  Then we learned our new letter of the week is Cc and says the /c/ sound (as in cat), and our new sight word of the week is "have."  We read the Alpha Tales book, Copycats, about two cats that like to copy each other.  Then we did our letter C picture guess, read our Message of the Day, and did calendar.  We went outside and enjoyed some recess time in the snow.  During reading, we read the fictional story, My Special Sweet Potato Pie, about run away sweet potatoes that need to be caught.  After reading, we worked on math.  We weighed objects and counters on a scale to make sure the scale is balanced and even.  The morning class had Free Choice Time and our PM class had Library Checkout.

Reminders:
1) Homework Folders and Take Home Books came home today!
2) Please make sure your child has warm snow gear for outdoor recess (hat, boots, gloves, and jacket).

Have a great evening!
