Wednesday!

Today was another great day!  We started by introducing our second letter of the week, Vv!  We read Vera Viper's Valentine and did our picture guess for V.  Then we worked in our new science journals.  Since our science unit is on animals, we started by discussing our favorite animals and drawing it.   Right now we have fish in our classroom (not many because a lot have died), so we labeled all the parts of the fish in our science journals.  Then we did our Calendar and Daily News routine.  Luckily the weather held out for us during our recess times!  After recess, we read our leveled decoders in each group.  Each book was a non-fiction book about animals in the sea.  We also worked on our sight word "look" page, writing, and listening.  After reading groups, we did a fun adding and subtracting dice activity with our new elbow partners.

Tuesday

Today was a great day!  We started out with subtraction fluency from 5!  Students are doing a great job using their fingers to show their thinking!  After the fluency page, we continued with our narrative writing.  Figuring out what the When, Where, Who and the Hint of the Plot!  This is the beginning of our story, so tomorrow we will go on to the middle of our story...what happens next in our fictional story.  After that we had a wonderful outdoor recess.  Then we had our reading groups, focusing on our letter Xx and our sight words "has" and "look."  Today we blended words with the /x/ sound and read our decodable book.  We also practiced writing Xx, did our ABC page for X and listened to a story.  Then we did our math lesson focusing on all the ways to make 10!

Wednesday!

Today was such a great day!  We started by finishing our Lorax mustaches from yesterday and Play Doh.  Then we did our math focusing on subtraction with numbers up to 10.  The students are doing a really nice job with this!  We are working on showing "subtraction" (our word of the week), with number sentences, pictures and number bonds.  After math, we introduced our second letter of the week, Ww!  We read our Alpha Tales book, Worm's Wagon and did our picture guess for things that start with the /w/ sound.  After that we did our Calendar and Daily News routine.  Then we enjoyed a nice recess outside.  After recess, we had reading groups working with the letter w.  We also read our leveled readers, did our sight word "she" page, read our decodable and listened to the story "Dinorella."  After reading groups, we worked on our Narrative writing some more from yesterday.  We learned our Narrative chant that helps us to remember what we need at the beginning of our story.  "When? Where? Who? And a Hint of the Plot (HOP)!"  You might have heard your little one chanting it yesterday!  These are elements you can ask your child while you are reading at home.  Students understanding of these elements will help us with writing our own stories.

You might ask these types of questions:
1) When did the story take place?
2) Where did the story take place?
3) Who was in the story?  Who is the main character?
4) What is a hint of the plot or hint of what might happen in the story?

These story elements are normally found at the beginning of the book and sometimes we might need to get these answers from pictures in the book.

Here is an example of the beginning of one story we looked at today.

After writing, AM students had Free Choice Time and PM students chose to play Four Corners!

Reminders:
1) Tomorrow is the Take Home Book Exchange!
2) Friday, the Homework Folder is due.
3) Friday, Library books are due.
4) We have our Fourth Grade Buddies this Friday!
5) Art-A-Baloo is next Friday, April 29th!

Have a great evening!

Happy Monday!

Today was such a beautiful day!  We started our day by reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.  Earth Day is this Friday, so all week, we will be talking about ways to keep our earth clean and healthy.  After that we had a social skills lesson with Mrs. Pittz.  Today's lesson was about how to be an encouraging and helpful friend.  After that we had a nice recess outside in the beautiful sunshine.  Then each student wrote a promise to help the earth.  After that we painted our own earth.  Then we introduced our new letter of the week, Gg and our new sight words: she and he.  We read our Alpha Tales book, Be Good, Gorilla!  Then we guessed what things start with the /g/ sound in our Question Can and Alphabet Can.  The AM class finished the day by starting our new math unit on subtraction and PM finished the day with Library.  PM will get the math lesson tomorrow.

Today was such a great day!  We started our day with drawing our April Self Portrait.  Students are getting really good at the process of drawing ourselves.  Then we did our Calendar and Daily News routine.  After that, we enjoyed our recess outside.  After recess, we had reading groups.  Today in reading groups we focused on the sounds each letter makes, sounding our three and four letter words, breaking the words up into each individual sound, reading our decodable book, finding sight words, writing numbers the correct way (without reversals), and we listened to "I wanna Go Home" by Orloff and Catrow.  Then we worked on Slicing Apple Number Bonds, but today our focus was to start with the total (sum) and find two numbers that are our "parts" (addends).  Then we practiced one of our songs for our Kindergarten Concert.

Welcome Back!

The kiddos and I had a wonderful day together! It was so fun to share everything that we did over break, give hugs, and get back into our routine.

Today we welcomed Mrs. Pittz into our classroom for another social skills lesson. We focused on accidents and when accidents happen, we need to say that we are sorry and that it was an accident. We did a few practice scenarios, too. We then transitioned to math, where we reviewed number bonds and the equation that goes along with them. After math, we went outside for a wonderful recess in the sun. Once recess was over, we did our normal calendar and Daily News routine. Lastly, we read the book Sunflower House by Eve Bunting.
We focused on what happened first, middle, and last; as well as new vocabulary words and rhyming words.
