Terrific Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday!!

It has been a great week so far! We are reviewing and sharpening our skills of the sounds Qq, Zz, Jj, Yy and the sight words with, me, what, my, and where. Today, we spent time reading and blending sounds and writing words.  In reading group, we worked on segmenting the sounds in a word, blending sounds to make words and also read our readers.  At the parent helper rotation, we worked on subtraction with Pete the Cats Buttons, and we listened to a fictional story about a shark.

In math, we are also focusing on the students' fluency for subtraction and addition, as well as, drawing story problems and writing number sentences that match.

It has been a fun week for Isopods in science!  Yesterday, we had our Pill Bugs and Sow Bugs out for a race and the Sow Bugs won!  Pill Bugs are known as the Roly Poly, so we had a lot of fun holding those!  Today, we observed, compared and contrasted our Isopods.

Updates and Reminders:

If you and your child filled out the reading log to earn a Silverwood ticket, those are coming home in a white envelope tomorrow (Wednesday).  Please check your students backpack, and please treat these tickets like you would cash.  There are not any replacement tickets if your ticket is lost.

Happy Tuesday!

This week, our letter of the week is Yy, which makes the /yee/ sound.  Our sight words this week are "where" and "me."  Yesterday, we had a blast with worms!  Each student held a night crawler or a red worm if they wanted to.  We looked at the body parts and observed how they moved.  This whole week we are learning about worms and what they do!

Today, we started our day with decorating and coloring a memory book page, then writing the capital Q and lowercase q, calendar, and daily news.  During reading groups we worked on blending and sounding out words with our letter of the week.  We cut, glued and colored our "ball of yarn" into our ABC book and listened to "Mother, You're The Best..." in honor of Mother's Day.  After reading groups, in math we worked on taking apart numbers to find the two parts that make up that number.  This week we are still working on subtraction using number bonds, and number sentences.  We finished up our day with practicing our songs for our end of the year concert with Mrs. Longmeier's class.

We started our day with a math sprint, and then we worked on a super-special gift for Mother's Day! Most gifts were taken home today, a few will be sent home tomorrow. We then transitioned to reading groups, where kiddos worked on initial sounds, reading, ABC books, and listening.  We then worked on math subtraction sentences and number bonds.  Then we continued our day with science, reading all about worms.  We ended our day with a short recess in the beautiful sunshine!

Important Information:
1The students have P.E., music, and library tomorrow!
2. Library books are due (if they weren't turned in today).
3. Homework folders are due tomorrow. Please be sure your child's HW is turned in with their folder. I am looking forward to reading all the kiddos' stories!

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

This week has been a super fun packed week already!  This week our focus is on the letter Jj this week and the sight words "with" and "my".  Tomorrow we will also introduce the letter Qq!

In Math, we are now changing our focus from addition to subtraction. We have been practicing how to "take away" objects and writing a matching subtraction sentence. It's been really fun to watch the students acquire a stronger knowledge of addition and subtraction these past few weeks.

Yesterday, we had snail races! The students observed the land snails and predicted who would win the race while using our science vocabulary.  It was so fun to see the students watch the snail races!  As you can imagine, the races are kind of slow, but very fun and interesting all the same!  Yesterday, students also had the opportunity to hold a land snail in their hand!

Today, we observed water snails! Once we discussed the characteristics of the water snails, we discussed the similarities and differences between the land snails and the water snails. They are very interesting and cute creatures!
